Located at the southwest of Zhangye city, the Giant Buddha Temple was named for there is a super large indoor sleeping Buddha statue inside it. It is also called “Sleeping Buddha Temple”.
The temple covers an area of 23,000 square meters. It is facing the west. Inside the temple are Dafo (Giant Buddha Hall, Cangjing (Depositary of Buddhist Texts) Pavilion and Tuta (meaning a pagoda made of earth) Pagoda and more.
|What to See/Do:||Dafo (Giant Buddha) Hall: This hall is 48.3 meters long with ten pillars and 24.5 meters wide with six pillars and 20.2 meters high. It is a two-storey building with two eaves. Inside the hall are 31 color painted sculptures produced during the Western Xia regime (1038-1227). The sleeping Buddha in the hall is the largest indoor sleeping Buddha in China. The body of the Buddha is 34.5 meters long, and its shoulder is 7.5 meters wide. Each of its ear is about 4 meters long, and each of its foot is about 5.2 meters long. Its middle finger can even hold one adult. Eight people can sit on its ear at the same time. So you can imagine how large the Buddha is!
Cangjing (Depositary of Buddhist Texts) Pavilion: This depositary is 21.3 meters long and 10.5 meters wide with a single eave.
Tuta Pagoda: The pagoda was previously called “Mituo Thousand Buddha Pagoda” built with bricks and earth. It is now 33.37 meters high.
