Located 1km southwest of Xiahe County, Sangke Grassland is surrounded by hills. The grassland itself is broad and flat. On this ideal natural pasture grows abundant water plants and flocks and herds.

Sangke Grassland is a piece of meadow steppe with an average altitude of over 3,000 meters above the sea level and covers an area of about 70 square kilometers. On this broad grassland lives only about 4,000 inhabitants, making it a very precious natural tourism zone. The best season to visit the grassland is between June and September, when various Tibetan food and performances are presented to tourists so that people can fully enjoy the pure Tibetan lifestyles.

What to See/Do: If you happen to visit Sangke Grassland around June 15th in Chinese lunar calendar, you will see local people dressing them up and going out to set up camps on the beautiful grassland to spend about 10 happy days here. Even local monks are envious and want to see their families too. This is the traditional “Xianglang Festival”. During this festival, they will hold various activities, such as: horse riding, cattle riding, wrestling and tug-of-war. Tibetan will sit by the burning fire and sing and dance at night. They don’t leave until deep night; young people are left to sing love songs to each other. As Labrang Lamasery is not far from Sangke Grassland, you may also spare your time here.

Public transport: Option one, take a minibus at the parking lot of Labrang Lamasery at 3RMB or charter a car from the Labrang Lamasery to get here at 60RMB; Option two, take a taxi from Xiahe County center at 30RMB for a single trip; Option three, you can also rent a bike at the hotel or hostel of Xiahe County at various prices. The average price is 10RMB per day.
