Beijing is famous for its centuries-old alleys known as hutongs. The siheyuan (courtyard houses) that line them were built with their backs turned on the outside world with the main entrance set in otherwise blank walls. What is charm to visitors is the ‘real life’ of Beijing in these neighborhoods of narrow, twisting alleys.
Nanluoguxiang Snack Street
Nanluogu Xiang (South Gong and Drum Lane, Nanluogu Alley) is among one of the oldest hutongs around and has a history of over 800 years. This 800-meter long North-South alleyway is filled with bars, cafes, restaurants, artsy little shops, souvenir shops and cute boutiques.
