Day 1: Arrival in Lanzhou
Your private guide and driver will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to hotel. The remainder of today is yours to relax or explore the local area.
Day 2: Lanzhou: Cruise from Liujiaxia Gorge to Bingling Temple, White Pagoda Hill, Overnight train to Jiayuguan Pass
You will take a fast boat trip from Liujiaxia Gorge to Bingling Temple, which is a series of grottoes filled with Buddhist sculpture carved into natural caves and caverns in a canyon along the Yellow River. In wintertime it is inaccessible due to low water levels, but other attractions or experiences can be recommended to you.
A half hour climb of the White Pagoda Hill by the Yellow River will reward you with a wonderful view of Lanzhou City and the surrounding mountains.
In the evening your guide will take you to the railway station to board the overnight train to Jiayuguan Pass.
Day 3: Jiayuguan Pass: Great Wall on the Cliff, Jiayuguan Pass, Great Wall Museum
After an early arrival to Jiayuguan Pass you will be picked up by your guide and taken to see the Great Wall on the Cliff, also called the “Suspended Wall”. In this remote location the ridge necessitated building in such a steep angle, that it appears to half hang off the cliff. Nearby Jiayuguan Pass forms an impressive sight against the backdrop of magnificent mountains and the Gansu Corridor. The adjacent Great Wall Museum has a wide range of artifacts telling the story of the world’s longest wall.
Day 4: Drive to Dunhuang: Mogao Caves
Mogao Caves, also called Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, are a vast collection of temples and grottoes, housing many of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years. A local guide will lead visitors in group here so as to minimize the damage incurred to these delicate relics. There is something very special about visiting this site; it’s like stepping back in time.
Day 5: Dunhuang: Echoing-Sand Mountain and Crescent Lake, Riding on a camel, Departure by Air
The Echoing-Sand Mountain has been famous for centuries; the vast formation gives out an eerie hum in certain wind conditions. Crescent Lake between two dunes forms a lush oasis magically. Here you can ride a camel to feel what the Silk Road merchants experienced.
In the afternoon your guide will take you back to Dunhuang for your flight onwards.
