Your guide will be on time, holding a sign with your name on it and waiting for you at the exit of the train station and then take you to the pre-booked hotel. After check-in, you will explore the main attractions in Datong city.
The Datong Nine-Dragon Screen Wall is the oldest and largest glazed screen in China. A screen wall is a traditional Chinese architectural feature, used for blocking the view from the front gate.
In the afternoon you will visit one of the biggest Buddhist grottoes in China — the Yungang Grottoes . We will arrange a battery cart at the attraction, so you can avoid the long walk between grottoes and have more time to see the statues.
As for lunch and dinner, your guide will be happy to recommend some local restaurants and assist you with ordering the dishes, so you can taste the most authentic local food.
Day 2: Datong to Pingyao, On the Way Visit Hanging Temple and Yingxian Wooden Pagoda
Today you are leaving for Pingyao. It takes about 5 hours by car from Datong to Pingyao. On the way to Pingyao, pay a visit to the miraculous Hanging Temple on Mount Hengshan, which is hailed as one of the most spectacular and mysterious architectural miracles in history.
After lunch, you will be transfered to visit the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. As a UNESCO site, the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is the oldest and tallest surviving wooden structure in China.
After visiting the pagoda, you will travel by highway directly to Pingyao, and check in at your hotel in Pingyao Ancient Town.
Day 3: Pingyao Ancient Town
Your ancient town tour starts with the Ancient City Wall. If you are a photographer, sunrise at the Ancient City Wall is a great chance to grasp the charm of the ancient town.
The Rishengchang Former Bank is the site of the first draft bank in China. Your tour guide will explain how the bank operated, and it will be interesting to see what banking used to be like 150 years ago.
Under the environment of social unrest in the poor Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), the protection of the tangible currency was extremely important; therefore, escort companies appeared. The Armed Escort Company Museum shows how this special business was formed and how it was run, and also introduces the top 10 escort companies and top 10 guards – they were all kungfu masters.
As for dinner, your guide will recommend some nice restaurants in the Mingqing Street area. The lanterns are all on at night, and it is very lively there in the evening.
Day 4: Shuanglin Temple, Wang’s Family Compound, and Pingyao Departure
The Shuanglin Temple is about 10 minutes driving distance from the ancient town. Today your tour will start from it. It has over 2,000 colored mud sculptures, and is considered to be the “unrestored glory”of Pingyao.
Then you will be transfered to the Wang’s Family Courtyard, which takes an hour driving. Lunch will be arranged in a local restaurant on the way — your tour guide will assist you with reading the menu and ordering the dishes, and you will taste the most authentic local food.
The Wang’s Family Compound has a nickname — the Forbidden City in Folk. Different from the famous Qiao’s Family Compound, the Wang family was an official family, which had a higher social status. The family’s generations lasted for over 300 years and built the compound that is approximately 250,000 square meters in size, among which 45,000 square meters (one fifth) is open to tourists. There are 123 courtyards and 1,118 rooms. You will spend about two hours here.
