Jiucenglou (Nine Storey Tower)

Jiucenglou

Located in the center of Mogao Caves, Nine Storey Tower is 45 meters high and is built upon a mountain cliff. In the tower is the largest indoor clay statue of Maitreya in the world, sitting with his legs crossed.

What to See/Do: As the 96th cave among Mogao Caves, it is commonly known as “Great Buddha Hall”. It is a landmark of Mogao Caves. The statue in the cave is called “Bei Da Xiang (North Giant Statue)”. This magnificent statue is 35.5 meters high and was made of clay blended with straws, fibers and cottons in the reign of Empress Wu Zetian. After several restorations, it does not have the previous appearance as constructed in Tang Dynasty.

Admission: Ticket price is included in Mogao Caves.
Address: 25 km southeast of Dunhuang, Gansu Province.
Opening time: 09:00 – 17:00.
Public transport: Take minibus at No. 151, Yangguan Zhonglu, Dunhuang City (opposite Dunhuang Hotel)at 8RMB; The earliest bus departs at 08:30, and the last bus is at about 7pm.
