Crescent Lake is a miraculous scenery area with lake water at the north foot of Mingsha Shan (Echoing-sand Mountain). The spring under Echoing-sand Mountain is merged into a lake and surrounded by sand dunes.

Crescent Lake is located 5 kilometers southwest of Dunhuang, Gansu Province. It was one of the eight views in Dunhuang since Han Dynasty. In Tang Dynasty, there used to be boats in the pool and temples alongside the spring. At south of the spring were groups of quaint architectures, in which hundreds of colorful sculptures were displayed. The pool resembles a moon, hence its name Crescent Lake. The best season to visit Crescent Lake is between May and October and it looks best in the afternoon or at dusk.

What to See/Do: The pool is surrounded by high dunes. Due to its special terrain, the sands don’t flow down the hill but upward when it blows, so the pool is never overwhelmed by sands and is called “a wonder in the desert”. Enjoying a sunset or sunrise here is quite an experience.
